Emergencies
In some
emergencies it may be possible for you to take preventative measures
to limit the damage caused by water leakage. This may particularly
be the case in the early hours of the morning when it can be very
expensive to call out an emergency plumber. If you know where your
valves are to isolate a leakage you may be able to wait until normal
working hours before calling someone to fix the problem.
Every homeowner should
at least know where their main stopcock is situated. If you do not
then check the following locations.
Under the kitchen sink
In a cupboard in the hallway.
Under the floorboards just inside the front door.
In a garage.
In a cellar.
In a downstairs w.c.
If you can not locate the stopcock in any of the above areas you
will find one outside either on the pavement or in your garden.
However unless these are fairly new you will need a special key
for turning them off.
You should also have
gate valves which are usually located in the airing cupboard or
on the pipework coming off your tank in the loft. Depending on where
the leak is coming from these should also be turned off and the
taps run until water stops flowing.
Remember to fill a
few buckets and saucepans before your water runs out.
Then in the morning
give us a call. All of the above information
deals with most problems. We do not however accept any responsibility
in respect to any actions you take following these instructions. If
you require us to visit your property and label your isolating valves
we can do so at a fixed cost. Please contact us for this service.
Please note that our
receptionists are not plumbers and cannot provide plumbing advice
over the phone. They can however arrange for a plumber to visit
your property.
